I have a translation exam tomorrow. Is anyone a translator who can give me some advice?

Since I'll be translating from Spanish to English, will my essay (the target language) be in English or Spanish?I know that with translation, the target language is opposite of linguistics, right?EX: My mother tongue (Source language) is English. My target language (2nd language is Spanish), speaking linguistically. But when it comes to translation, I have to translate FROM Spanish (source language in translation terms) TO English (target) since English is my native tongue. So, with translation, would my essay tomorrow be in English or Spanish. I'm confused. We have to do the 1st portion, which is translate from Spanish to English. & on the 2nd portion, we have to write an essay in the TARGET language. In this case, English would be correct, right?

The target would be whichever one the exam is for – it may be one or both – depends on what exam it is. There’s no convention about “linguistics” and “translation” meaning different target languages with respect to your native tongue. Most commonly, you’d have to go both ways, but for some applications it’d just be one or the other. Strictly speaking, “linguistics” is the study of language in general and may or may not involve translation. However, there are a few institutions like the US military that use a weird terminology in which “linguist” means “translator,” but outside of those institutions, a “linguist” is usually a scholar and a “translator” is someone who translates written things from one language to another. A real-time translator is an “interpreter.”

Yes, your essay in target language would be in English. It would be most illogical that they’d ask you to do an essay in a language which is not your mother tongue. One trick when you do a translation exam: read all the exam, do the translations worth the most points at first, taking your time, do the rest of the translations, then come back on the first translation you’ve done.Good luck!

Yes you are right.. your target language is English.. but your objective is to translate as closely enough to the meaning.. from the Spanish language…both are Spanish to English if you say you translate from Spanish to English.. that makes it easier perhaps for you as English is your first language.. you will not make spelling mistakes in your own mother tongue.. but it’s still hard work to translate from a foreign language to your mother tongue… but I suppose it’s more challenging if you had to do it from English to Spanish..I did an exam many years ago as a translator at the Chamber of Commerce.. but I did English /German and vice versa.. but as the German language is not in demand.. everybody speaks English well enough and German will never be a world language unlike Spanish, I just took a job where I combined being an office clerk and a translator in an international company…Good luck for the exam…If you believe in yourself and stay focused.. you will pass. x
