“Manifest Destiny” was a phrase used by the Americans in the mid 19th century to justify territorial expansion. It appears to have originated in an unsigned article in “The United States Magazine and Democratic Revue” of July 1845, referring to “the fulfillment of our manifest destiny to overspread the continent allotted by Providence for the free development of our yearly multiplying millions”. Within a few months, the phrase became popular with expansionist members of Congress anxious for war with Mexico, settlement of the Oregon Question (a dispute between the U.S.A. and Canada (and therefore Great Britain) over the border between the two countries, and the acquisition of California (from the Spanish). The coziness between Texas and Great Britain is a new one on me, but perhaps it was a fear that Texas might become independent, and therefore weaken the United States as a Union. This would be to the advantage of Britain who felt that they had a “manifest destiny” over the rest of the world. Mexico would have wanted to regain control of Texas, and always hoped it could,( in fact in 1917 in the Zimmerman telegram, Germany offered to hand Arizona,Texas and New Mexico back to Mexico if they would allow German troops to attack the United States over the Mexican border. The publishing of this telegram is what brought America into WWI). I suppose the shabby thing that Santa Anna did was kill Davy Crockett, but that is just a guess.
