The two stars orbit each other, and the plane of their mutual orbit is nearly in line with the Solar System. So when the smaller star passes ‘behind’ the larger one, it gets eclipsed by the larger one, and seems to disappear. That hides its light from us while it’s back there, and so reduces Algol’s apparent total brightness.Halfway further around its orbit, it passes in front of the larger star, hiding some of its light from us, causing a smaller dip in the brightness of the system.Such a system is called an eclipsing binary. Algol is the best known example of this class of variable star (that means that its apparent brightness changes).
