Quoting in an essay from a book with more than one author?

For my essay, there is a quote from J.R.R. Tolkien that I'd like to use from The letters of J.R.R. Tolkien. I am confused though, because the book of letters is credited to three people, J.R.R. Tolkien, Christopher Tolkien, and Edited by Humphrey Carpenter. In the essay itself, whose name would I put in parantheses?

You would not list an editor as a source for a quote. So, that one is out. If the entire book is credited to two people, and you are using a quote from the book without knowing specifically who wrote it, then I would just credit both people (ie. “JRR Tolkien and Christoper Tolkien” or “JRR and Christopher Tolkien”)
