Essay on photography, hook?

I haven't the slightest idea what type of hook in the intro I should write.Basically, I'm writing about different techniques and early cameras and where it's used most. And by hook, I mean - what draws the reader in, in the intro.

Your thesis statement above tells me very little. An interesting thesis will be all the “hook” you need. What are you saying about techniques or early cameras that would make me want to read your essay? There are a zillion techniques, and hundreds of improvements in cameras, from wet emulsion, to dry emulsion, to film, to digital, with many, many steps in between. Go ahead and add some details, then I’ll try to say something more useful. Your extended question details make me think of Alfred Stieglitz. I have not read about his cameras and techniques, but you can infer a lot about about his technique by looking at his photos. There are a lot of online resources, and a good library should have books of photos and text that should help. He was master of the documentary portrait, in group and individual setting. In spite of primitive equipment, he capture drama, force of personality, and wonderful interaction with the photographer. He further can evoke the pathos of a Madonna and child, the rough strength and persistence of a hardened laborer. His artistic and personal relationship with Georgia O’Keefe might be worth exploration, also.I would look at how much camera technology improvements did (or did not) affect the success of the photographer and the evolution of his technique over the years. Focusing on a single photographer would make it easier.Ansel Adams might make an interesting subject for such a paper. His most famous technique, the Zone System, is very well documented, and was a major source of continuity in his career. His typical use of large format view cameras has an obvious impact on his images, and goes a long way to the quality for which his images made him an artistic and commercial success. The two ideas I spouted off the top of my head are my mutterings of the consideration of a thesis for such an essay. If you can condense this graphite into a diamond, that’s the hook you seek. Pithy, and sharply and clearly focused on an idea of how the concepts relate to the photographer and his work and history.
