You have to keep in mind that these are two very different books. The House on Mango Street is about a girl named Esperanza. There is no actual plot and no real story. it’s just bits and pieces of her life from her eyes. Her neighborhood, her friends, her family, things that happen to her, people she meets, places she goes, things like that. They aren’t really linked other than being about the girl and her life. It’s an interesting book. You get to know the narrator well and you start to feel a connection with her. She’s a smart girl who feels trapped and out of place on Mango Street. Cannery Row is a story with an actual plot. there’s a reason behind it other than just a coming of age story. It’s a sad and humorous book that I enjoyed. I don’t know you so I’m not sure which book you would prefer. The house on Mango street is a quick easy read if that’s what your looking for. The theme is obvious and clearly seen threw out the story. I think Cannery Row is a sad but touching book. Very good too. The theme is less obvious and Steinbeck often includes more than theme in his books, making them very deep and layered. Both are good choices and I hope you enjoy reading which ever one you choose. You could probably read both.
